Sierra and LucasArts History

LucasArts Entertainment Company LLC is an American video game developer and publisher. The company was famous for its innovative line of graphic adventure games, the critical and commercial success of which peaked in the mid 1990s. Today, it publishes games primarily based on the Star Wars franchise, with several new Star Wars games due in 2010 and a new Indiana Jones game.

The company was founded in May 1982 as the video game development group of Lucasfilm Limited, the film production company of George Lucas. Lucas had wanted his company to branch out into other areas of entertainment, and so he cooperated with Atari to produce video games.

In 1993, LucasArts decided to base its first game off of the Star Wars franchise, essentially branching into new territory. Of course, their next big and hotly anticipated game in the long series of Star Wars games since then is MMORPG - Star Wars: The Old Republic.

Sierra Entertainment (formerly Sierra On-Line) was founded in Los Angeles, California in 1979 by Ken and Roberta Williams. They are best known for their famous graphical adventure games started in the 1980s, such as King's Quest and Quest For Glory.

Before they were Sierra On-Line, they were just On-Line Systems. This is when they created their first graphical adventure game entitled Mystery House, which was a gamble for the company, much like playing the casino slots at the Europa Casino.

The company was eventually sold to CUC International back on July 24, 1996 for 1.5 billion dollars. Since then, the company has shifted owners from the likes of Vivindi Universal, to where it currently stands: Blizzard-Activision.

Even though the company is a former shell of what it once was, we will remember forever the impact it had on all our lives, as kids growing up, playing games like Mixed up Mother Goose, and Mixed up Fairy Tales. We will never forget what Sierra On-Line did for us as a gaming society, and we will make sure their legacy lives on forever.
